Where to Propose in Madrid?
Madrid has no shortage of stunning settings for saying "yes" or celebrating your engagement. Palaces, historic gardens, parks, and rooftops with city views: the options are endless. That's why, in my opinion, the most important question isn't "which place is the prettiest?" but rather: "which of these places best tells our story?"
As a marriage proposal photographer in Madrid, I've been by the side of many couples during this once-in-a-lifetime moment. If you're planning a proposal in Madrid or an engagement photo session, here are my suggestions.
1.Royal Palace Gardens
The Royal Palace of Madrid is one of the largest royal palaces in Europe, and its gardens are a classic backdrop for engagement photos in Madrid. There are two gardens, each with a very different personality.

Sabatini Gardens
These offer a front view of the palace façade, plus other beautiful angles with green trees and the building in the background. If you want something more private, arrive very early. During busy hours, this isn't the best spot for an intimate moment.

Campo del Moro Gardens
The view of the palace here is from the side, but the green corridor leading your eye toward it is wonderful. It's a favorite among couples looking for something more intimate and less touristy for their marriage proposal. Fall is the most beautiful season to capture the moment.
2. Retiro Park

Retiro Park needs no introduction. It's Madrid's most iconic park, with beautiful spots for every taste and every season. For proposal photos in Retiro Park, here are my suggestions:
La Rosaleda (the Rose Garden)Perfect in spring, with a romantic atmosphere.
Crystal Palace (Palacio de Cristal)
It's currently under renovation and is expected to reopen in 2027. Even so, its exterior and the lake around it still make great backdrops.

Pro tip: Before every session, I help couples choose the best setting based on their story, the season, the weather, and any construction or restrictions in the parks. For surprise proposals, I also plan the exact spot and time so everything happens discreetly and in the best light.
Alfonso XII Monument
The colonnade by the lake adds grandeur and symmetry to your photos.

3. The Best Place is the one that tells your story
Remember when I said at the beginning that the ideal place depends on each couple's story? Here's a creative example.
Mike planned his proposal to Cristy right here in Madrid. Her dream was to jump into a pool fully clothed, and it had become a running joke between them. Very creatively, Mike organized his marriage proposal at a rooftop pool with views over Madrid at sunset. Take a look at the result:
Not every proposal has to happen at a postcard-perfect spot. It could be the place of your first date, a favorite corner of the city, or a nod to an inside joke only the two of you understand. The most beautiful setting is the one that means something to you as a couple!
